Usability Testing
I conducted a total of six user tests. I chose a broad group of users to ensure diverse outcome with my results. This feedback was very helpful to address issues that needed to be tackled. I made the necessary changes, that you willl see below.
Test Plan

Introduction

Swello Remote Usability Test Plan (Mobile)

Moderated by Maggie Ensey

Last updated: June 2021

Background

The Swello app is deigned for users who partake in water sport activities such as surfing, sailing, fishing, etc. Swello provides real time conditions such as wind, tide, swell, temperature, and forecasts for the days ahead. Swello provides easy to read forecasts while helping people stay safe for their days out on the water.

Goals

The goal of this study is to improve the usability and functionality of the application by testing the users interaction with the prototype. I am testing my designs to help get an understanding of what I need to improve on, and how I can make the experience more pleasant.

Test Objectives

-
Observe how the users navigate the sign up and log in pages
-
Determine how the users navigate the app while searching for a surf break locations
-
Observe how the users explore the conditions display, and understand if it provides the information needed before going out in the water

Methodology

This test was conduced via Zoom and Skype. Prior to the test I explained to the participants what to expect during the study. The participants were given three tasks to complete with the Figma prototype, and their feedback was recorded and collected.

Participants and Schedule

I conducted a total of six tests via Zoom and Skype on June 10th and 11th. I recruited my participants between family and friends, I chose four of them who participate in water sports and two of them who did not. I will link the demographic and personality information here. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Mqggpp1cl2YBudpGzG74mOUGfdL2l7_94hYOJgBQSVA/edit?usp=sharing

Test Report
Introduction

I tested a total of six participants. I chose four of them who participate in water sports and the other two do not. I wanted to make sure to get a wide range of feedback from participants, so that I could receive non bias feedback. All of the session were performed via Zoom or Skype, and they were done with the Figma link to my mobile prototype. All of the participants seemed to navigate with ease, two of them were a little confused with the Figma website, but I was able to explain it and carry on without any trouble. I discovered useful feedback from all of my participants, and most of them recommended some changes for me to make. I will display those below and include what I did to fix the errors.

Issue 1 - Participants had trouble navigating the Search Engine (High Severity)
-
Suggested Change- Rearrange the search page, and add a description for the regions section
-
Evidence- Five out of the six users had trouble navigating the search engine, and suggested I made a change
Issue 2 - No direct home page (Medium Severity)
-
Suggested Change- Create a home page and include the favorite inside of that feature
-
Evidence- Two out of six participants were confused about where the home page was located
Issue 3 - Missing Map feature (High Severity)
-
Suggested Change- Add a map feature to allow users to explore via map
-
Evidence- Four out of the six participants complained about not having a map feature and pointed out how useful it would be
Issue 4 - Having to sign up for an account without exploring the app first (Medium Severity)
-
Suggested change- Add the option to explore as guest
-
Evidence- Three out of six participants noted how it was frustrating that they had to sign up before they get to explore the application
Issue 5 - Not having the most important information on the first page of the conditions display (Low Severity)
-
Suggested change- Display the conditions in a different order, and add a different section for the forecasts
-
Evidence- Two out of six participants pointed out that they would like to see the tide information on the first page of the conditions display
